Massage is one of the oldest forms of therapy, and modern clinical research now demonstrates its multitude of benefits; from its effectiveness as a treatment for pain relief, to its emotional and immune-boosting benefits. Regular massage can be beneficial for enhancing mood, reducing stress and relieving pain.

Massage activates the parasympathetic nervous system, which governs the body’s processes of relaxation, digestion, repair and rebalancing. It reduces levels of the stress hormone cortisol, and boosts the hormones responsible for health and happiness (oxytocin and endorphins).

We offer many types of massage, from heads and faces down to feet, so there will always be something suitable for you. As well as the more commonly known Deep tissue, Sports and Swedish massages, we have some not so widely known ones as well. Give them a try! For those that would prefer to remain clothed, Indian Head Massage, Reflexology, Shiatsu and Tuina are lovely options. Both pregnancy and post-natal massages are available, and you can even learn how to massage little one yourself at our popular Baby Massage classes.

Postnatal Massage can be given as soon after labour as feel comfortable (we recommend waiting 6 weeks after having a Caesarean). Each session involves a full consultation, therapeutic massage bodywork, stretching (where appropriate), and can be a great way to boost your body after pregnancy and labour. Treatment can relieve physical discomforts, while providing emotional understanding and support A fantsastic way relieve the strain on your back and shoulders from breastfeeding, helping to rebalance your hormones, restore energy levels, and give back to yourself at a time in your life when you-time is limited! A choice of position is available at all times, to ensure your maximum comfort.

Ayurveda massage helps to remove muscular tension with the help of warm herbal bags, improving circulation, and removing stagnant energy flow and muscular stiffness, both of which can result in pain. Ayurveda also works with the energy system (Chakras), to release old emotional patterns which manifest in the body as pain and tension and mentally as stress. The oils and massages are rejuvenating, relaxing and deeply nourishing. This treatment incorporates many massage elements, including full body, Indian head, deep tissue, relaxation.

Deep Tissue massage can help if you suffer from knotted and tense shoulders, tight legs or lower back pain, to name but a few.  It improves your circulation therefore assisting repair and increasing mobility, while helping you slow down emotionally and physically, reducing anxiety and giving you an improved ability to deal with stress. People usually sleep really well after deep tissue massage! Pressure is applied using thumbs, forearms and elbows helping to lengthen muscles that are shortened and tense. The depth and pressure of the massage is kept within your comfort range for maximum benefit.

Pregnancy massage is a relaxing and safe way of providing nurturing emotional support and physical relaxation during all stages of pregnancy, as well as keeping you connected to your body and baby during a time of physical and emotional change. Massage can give wonderful relief from back pain, achy hips, fluid retention, nausea, tiredness, insomnia and heavy legs, amongst many other benefits. Great care is taken with comfort and positioning, and neutral oil is used. Pressure is tailored to suit your needs and preferences. The massage can, if wished, include a very light massage of your tummy with oils; this can be helpful for stretch marks, as well as enjoyable and soothing for baby.

Often termed the Tai Chi of massage, Pulsing is a full body therapy that can be given through clothing or onto skin with equally good effect. The therapist will gently stretch, shake and rotate the client’s legs and arms, and apply gentle pressure and rocking movements to the body as a whole, to detect and release areas of tension and discomfort. Pulsing is extremely effective for all age groups, body shapes and sizes. Children love and find it playful, yet calming. Older people benefit from increased mobility and vitality in weary limbs. Because of its gentle, non-invasive nature, Pulsing is also suitable for pregnant women, people with muscular, skin or skeletal problems and those with a limited mobility. As it combines massage-type techniques with soft rocking movements. it can also be a source of comfort and relief to people suffering from depression and anxiety.

The whole body is mapped out on the soles of the feet, and in reflexology a pressure point massage sequentially works through every part of the body through the feet. This stimulates the body’s own healing process, and is supportive for the bodily systems as a whole. Pressure will always be adapted to your needs, and clients often report feeling both relaxed and enlivened following treatment. The grounding effect of having work done on the feet can be helpful for postural support, emotional stabilising and freedom of movement.

Indian Head Massage focuses on the areas of the body where most people hold their tension – the upper back, shoulders, arms, neck, ears, head and face. It is therefore a fantastic treatment for the treatment of stress and tension so many of us carry. This lovely and non-invasive treatment helps to melt away tension throughout the body, clear the head and mind, relieve headaches, improve sinus drainage and skin tone, and create a deep sense of wellbeing and renewal.

Sports massage is an excellent way to prevent and recover from sport training or injury, but it is also great for the non-sporty! Sports massage can provide deep alleviation of many musculo-skeletal problems, from shoulder tension and back pain through to RSI and headaches. Deep massage techniques and stretching are used to reduce physical aches and pains, whether they are caused by sport, injury or simply the stresses of life. Stretching of the muscle is also performed along with advice regarding lifestyle and rehabilitation of injury.

Swedish Massage is a system of long strokes, kneading, friction, tapping, percussion, vibration and shaking motions, designed to increase the oxygen flow throughout the body, and release toxins from the muscles. Some other benefits of this massage style include shortening recovery time from muscular strain, increased circulation without increased heart load, stretching of ligaments and tendons, skin stimulation and soothing of the nervous system. It reduces stress, both emotional and physical, and feels both relaxing and invigorating.

By utilising a mixture of techniques including acupressure, using finger, thumb, hand, arm and elbow movements, combined with rolling, pressing, pushing, stroking and grasping techniques, Tuina aims to increase the flow of energy within the body and promote healing. Joint manipulation, gentle stretching and postural adjustment techniques make it an effective treatment for certain conditions, such as back pain, sciatica, sports injury and soft tissue (muscle & tendon) dysfunction.
